Hastings Law Library Access Policies
Library Access:
Hastings faculty, students and staff may use the library whenever it is open. Hastings alumni, members of the California Bar, and law students from other law schools may also use the library whenever it is open (including evening and weekend hours). Library hours are listed here. All library patrons are required to show a photo- ID at the first floor Security Desk. Visitors and alumni will be issued a visitor pass good for that day, after showing appropriate ID to security.
UCSF Students
Currently enrolled UCSF students may use the library whenever it is open, excluding Hastings exam periods. UCSF students will not be allowed night and weekend access during Hastings exam periods. All UCSF students will be required to sign in at the first floor Security Desk and show an appropriate UCSF student ID.
General Public
The general public may use the Hastings Law Library from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday (excluding recognized College Holidays (.pdf).) The general public also has access to a number of law libraries thoughout the Bay Area. All Hastings Law Library visitors are required to show a state-issued ID and to sign-in at the first floor Security Desk. Visiting Hastings Law Library patrons will be issued a visitor's pass good for that day, if they can state a valid reason for entering the library. Visitor passes must be worn at all times while in Hastings' buildings. The Security Desk cannot issue visitor passes to members of the general public for evening and weekend access.
Computer Lab, Wireless Network & Study Rooms:
Only Hastings students are allowed access to the library's computer lab and group study rooms. Alumni, attorneys, UCSF students and the general public are not allowed in the computer lab. Likewise, there is no public access to the Hastings wireless network in the library. For more details on computer lab access and additional information on library computer services click here.
Government Documents:
The library is a Selective Depository for United States government documents. It is also a Selective Depository for California publications distributed by the State Printer. Most of the library's government documents collection is on the 6th floor. More information is available on the Hastings Law Library Government Documents Department webpage.
The general public can access this collection Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. There is also a computer available on the 4th floor to access online government depository items. Students, faculty, and public patrons who need assistance locating government documents available through the Federal Depository Library Program can call the Hastings Reference Desk at (415) 565-4751 or e-mail Reference Librarian Chuck Marcus ( ) or simply stop by the Reference Desk Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM & 5:00 PM. As an alternative, the San Francisco Public Library's Government Information Center just down the block at 100 Larkin Street offers public access to one of the largest and oldest government documents collections in Northern California.
